The Libya Crimes Watch (LCW) has monitored the kidnapping of Ahmed Fatah Allah Al-Hawari, 35 years old, on the evening of Tuesday, January 30, 2024, from his workplace in the center of Tripoli, by armed Alradaa for Countering Terrorism and Organized Crime, and his abduction to an unknown location. Contact between him and his family has been cut off.

Ahmed was kidnapped due to his being the brother of activist Nasser Al-Hawari, who was arbitrarily arrested in Tripoli on January 29. Alradaa attempted to hand him over to the authorities in eastern Libya, before he managed to escape and move to a safe place. The LCW holds the Libyan Presidential Council and the Government of National Unity fully responsible for the safety and life of Ahmed Al-Hawari, and calls on them to make every effort to work for his immediate release without condition.

Furthermore, in accordance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the LCW urges the authorities to stop arbitrary detention and the use of activists’ families and relatives for pressure and blackmail.

The LCW calls on the Attorney General to open an urgent investigation into this violation, identify those responsible, and hold them accountable in accordance with the law. They also urge the Attorney General not to hand over the accused to their political opponents to ensure the fairness of the trial and the independence of the judiciary.
