Libya Crimes Watch (LCW) documented the injury of a (12-year-old) child who was struck by a bullet inside his home in the Janzour area, west of Tripoli, during armed clashes that erupted in residential neighbourhoods in the area on the evening of Thursday, 12 February, between the 137th Battalion and the Sixth Force, both affiliated with the Western Coast Military Zone of the Government of National Unity (GNU). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
LCW also\u00a0monitored\u00a0damage to Al\u2011Diya Clinic in\u00a0Janzour\u00a0as a result of\u00a0shell fragments, while patients and medical staff were inside, in addition to damage to homes and other civilian facilities in the surrounding area.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The continued outbreak of armed clashes within residential neighbourhoods and the exposure of health facilities to danger\u00a0constitute\u00a0a clear and repeated violation of the rules of international humanitarian law (IHL), particularly the principles of distinction and proportionality, and the obligation to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
LCW holds the GNU fully legally responsible for endangering the lives of civilians, including children, patients and medical staff, as a result of clashes between armed groups affiliated with it within populated areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
LCW calls on the Libyan Attorney General to open an urgent, transparent investigation into this incident and to hold those responsible accountable, ensuring they do not evade punishment.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
LCW also calls on the authorities in western Libya to take immediate and effective measures to protect civilians from the impact of armed clashes and to prevent the use of residential areas as arenas for military operations. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
