Today marks two years since the enforced disappearance of Libyan House of Representatives (HoR) member Ibrahim Abu Bakr Al-Dreisi, following his abduction in the city of Benghazi on 16 May 2024. Unknown armed individuals intercepted his vehicle in the city centre and took him to an undisclosed location. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite announcements by the authorities in eastern Libya and the Libyan Attorney General that investigations had been opened into the case, Al-Dreisi’s fate and whereabouts\u00a0remain\u00a0unknown to this day. No investigative findings have been\u00a0disclosed, and the circumstances of his disappearance and those responsible for it remain unclarified.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Libya Crimes Watch (LCW) affirms that the continuation of Al-Dreisi’s enforced disappearance for two full years, without truth being established or those responsible held to account, reflects the persistence of impunity and undermines any claim that serious investigations or effective accountability mechanisms are functioning in Libya. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
LCW reiterates its call upon the authorities in eastern Libya, including the General Command of the Libyan Arab Armed Forces (LAAF) and the Libyan Government accredited by the HoR, to immediately disclose Al-Dreisi’s fate and place of detention, ensure his safety, and release him immediately and unconditionally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
LCW further calls upon the Libyan Attorney General to publish the findings of the previously announced investigations into this case, and to ensure that those investigations are conducted with rigour and transparency, leading to the accountability of those responsible for his enforced disappearance in accordance with international fair trial standards. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
