Libya Crimes Watch (LCW) has officially submitted a complaint to several UN procedures, including the Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants and the Special Rapporteur on Contemporary Forms of Racism, the complaint is directed against the Libyan authorities, including the Ministry of Interior under the Government of National Unity (GNU), led by Imad Al-Trabelsi. This move follows a campaign of incitement, hate speech, and government statements targeting migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in Libya, which has led to serious human rights violations.
The complaint documents the violations suffered by migrants during the recent crackdown, including arbitrary arrests, targeting based on racial or legal status, physical violence, and ill-treatment in both official and unofficial detention centres. It also highlights cases of forced deportation, exposing migrants to grave risks. Additionally, the complaint underscores the growing hate speech and incitement to violence, which have fostered an increasingly hostile environment for migrants.
LCW has called on the UN Special Rapporteurs to pressure Libyan authorities to take urgent measures to protect migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, end hate campaigns and incitement and ensure accountability for those responsible for these violations. It also urged Libyan authorities to uphold the country’s obligations under international human rights law.
Alongside the complaint, LCW has shared its findings with international stakeholders, including key state actors and international organizations, as part of broader efforts to protect victims from further abuse and push for justice and accountability. This step aligns with LCW’s ongoing advocacy and follow up to our latest statement on the issue.
