Eight years have passed since the enforced disappearance of activist Abdulmatlub Al-Sarhani (34), who was abducted in Benghazi on 27 August 2017 by unidentified armed men. Since then, his fate and whereabouts remain unknown.
Despite repeated appeals to uncover his fate, the authorities in eastern Libya have taken no steps to reveal his whereabouts or hold those responsible for his abduction accountable.
Libya Crimes Watch (LCW) holds the authorities in eastern Libya fully legally responsible for his safety and his life and reiterates its demand for the immediate disclosure of his fate and his unconditional release.
LCW further calls on the Libyan Attorney General and the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to open an independent and transparent investigation into this crime, to take all necessary legal measures to ensure accountability for those responsible, and to guarantee that they do not escape impunity.
LCW also urges the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and international human rights organisations to exert pressure on authorities in both eastern and western Libya to disclose the fate of all victims of enforced disappearance in the country and to ensure justice for the victims and their families.
