LCW CALLS FOR AN INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION INTO THE KILLING OF SAIF AL-ISLAM GADDAFI
Libya Crimes Watch (LCW) documented the killing of presidential candidate Saif al-Islam Gaddafi on 3 February near the city of Zintan. His office reported that he was killed following an attack by unidentified armed individuals who targeted him in his residence.
LCW condemns this crime, which constitutes an extrajudicial killing and represents a grave violation of the right to life. LCW further stresses that the killing of Saif al-Islam, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC), does not constitute the pursuit of justice, but rather undermines accountability processes and deprives victims and their families of their right to truth and Justice.
LCW calls on the Libyan Attorney General to launch an independent, transparent, and urgent investigation into this crime, to ensure that its findings are publicly announced, and that those responsible are brought to trial in accordance with international fair trial standards, contributing to curbing the pervasive pattern of impunity in the country.
